1981/2

'Paua Sunglasses', frame 001, September 1981. This was in response to an invitation to exhibit jewellery ('Paua Dreams' at Fingers in Auckland) using paua shell in a new and different way. Found vintage brass spectacle frame, paua shell lenses, slits for vision.

'Paua Sunglasses', frame 002, October 1981. The paua shell chip and resin ash tray was and still probably is, the height of bad taste in New Zealand. Although I guess nowadays it's been elevated to the realms of kiwiana kitsch. Paua shell chip and resin, lenses, slits ...

'Paua Sunglasses', frame number 004, February 1982 Bronze frame, paua shell lenses, slits for visionOwner: Billie Taylor. I was still not able to source optical parts in New Zealand. 'Paua Sunglasses', frame 017, October 1982 Purchased by the Dowse Art Museum, Lower Hutt. By '82 I had started to venture into silver frames for paua lenses, still with sawn slits for reasonable vision. This style of frame was easily applied to holding optical lenses ...

'Tonto', frame 079, Feb 1984 sterling silver sunglass frames, CR39 hard resin lenses, dyed deep purple ... ...

'Tonto for Walter', frame 080, March 1984 Owner: Walter Aoake. My good friend Walter asked me for a silver frame - design that would really suit him. So he commissioned these. First he asked me to put rear-vision mirrors on each side, but I declined. Then asked me to sign the temple on the outside, like those fancy factory frames with 'designer's names' stamped there. So I did that. Sterling silver, CR39 lenses, dyed deep dark purple ...
